Iran hangs 12 people on Sunday July 24, 2007

Tehran, Iran, Jul. 22 – Iranian authorities hanged 12 people in Tehran on Sunday, the state broadcasting corporation executionIRIB reported on its website.

Tehran’s chief prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi announced that the 12 unnamed individuals were hanged earlier in the day.

He said their charges included kidnapping and drug trafficking.

Four other individuals were hanged in Tehran last week on similar charges, he added.

Iranian authorities routinely execute dissidents on bogus charges such as armed robbery and drug smuggling.

“After a few seconds I find [the lorry] has gone inside the ferry, it’s gone on board.

“I was waiting, waiting, just to see what is going to happen. It was really cold and painful laying down, not moving, not making any noise, sounds in case any ferry staff see or hear me.

“The lorry drove off the ferry but I cannot get out (of the box) unless it is parked.

“I wait for everything to settle down then I get out of the box and I find by the signs and writing that I am in Italy.” (more…)

An asylum seeker who was deported to Iran in 2004 has been describing how he managed to escape from custody and make his way back to the UK. In part two of this three-part series, the BBC News Website takes up Shahin Portofeh’s story from the point he escaped custody in Iran.

Kurdish Journalist, Activist Sentenced To Death In Iran July 19, 2007

 Authorities in Iran’s northwestern Kurdistan Province have condemned two ethnic Kurds to irandeath for acting against the country’s national security.

Their lawyers told Radio Farda that they will appeal their death sentences.

The trial has been accompanied by unconfirmed suggestions in the Iranian media that the two men — journalist Adnan Hassanpur and social activist Hiwa Butimar — were working with banned groups that oppose the government.

SAVED: CHRISTIAN WOMAN WHO FACED BEING STONED TO DEATH July 19, 2007

A WOMAN who faced being stoned to death in Iran for the “crime” of becoming a Christian was granted a re­prieve last night when Britain postponed her deportation.

Samar Razavi, 30, was just hours away from being forced on to a Tehran-bound plane when Daily Express columnist Ann Widdecombe raised her case in Parliament. (more…)

Call for immigrant amnesty in UK July 17, 2007

 Half a million illegal immigrants should be given the right to stay in Britain, a think tank has said. illegal immigrants

The Institute of Public Policy Research says such an amnesty would bring in £1bn in extra taxes, and save costs of £4.7bn needed to deport people.

It is urging Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to adopt the move, saying a large scale deportation would never happen. (more…)

The human rights situation deteriorated, with civil society facing increasing restrictions on fundamental freedoms of expression and association. Scores of political prisoners, including prisoners of conscience, continued to serve prison sentences imposed following unfair trials in previous years. Thousands more arrests were made in 2006, mostly during or following demonstrations. Human rights defenders, including journalists, students and lawyers, were among those detained arbitrarily without access to family or legal representation. Torture, especially during periods of pre-trial detention, remained commonplace. At least 177 people were executed, at least four of whom were under 18 at the time of the alleged offence, including one who was under 18 at the time of execution. Two people were reportedly stoned to death. Sentences of flogging, amputation and eye-gouging continued to be passed. The true numbers of those executed or subjected to corporal punishment were probably considerably higher than those reported. (more…)
